Herman De Dijn |
On the occasion of the retirement of professor Herman De Dijn, October 16-17, 2008, an International Colloquium was held at the Institute of Philosophy in Leuven, on Spinoza and Hume on Religion.
Throughout his academic career, two philosophers took pride of place in the teaching and research of professor Herman De Dijn: Benedict Spinoza and David Hume. His interest in het phenomenon of modernity led De Dijn to investigate central features of modern culture, particularly the role of religion in a secular society. The aim of the colloqium was to provide Spinoza and Hume scholars, some of whom former students of De Dijn, with the opportunity to reconsider the ‘philosophy of religion’ of Spinoza and Hume, and to investigate the relevance of their views to our current understanding of religion.
On October 17, 2008, professor De Dijn held his valedictory lecture (on “Three kinds of wonder”, in Dutch) in the Promotion Hall of the University .
The contributions to the Colloquium will be published in the Tijdschrift voor Filosofie in the years 2010 and 2011. The valedictory lecture (in Dutch) is to be found on the Dutch version of this website.
